Learning Disorders Awareness

Tutor Time Academy School and Learning Center is committed to doing our part to raise awareness and reshape the viewpoint about learning disorders(LD). We also strive to eliminate the struggles, negative experiences and scars our students have had to endure.

You may be a current or prospective Tutor Time family or just seeking to know more about Learning disorder education, we invite you to explore our resource center in the school lobby or schedule a consultation with the Head of Students.

We have provided the basic meaning of terms frequently used across our website and in our school community.

Dyslexia-is a language-based learning disorder that affects one's ability to read, as well as comprehend what has been read. It also affects related skills such as spelling, writing, pronunciation, rhyming, understanding word problems in math and recognizing and remembering common words in text. Research has shown that people with dyslexia tend to excel at 3D spatial reasoning, big picture thinking and creative problem-solving, among other strengths.

It is estimated that 1 in 5 of the population has dyslexia, and it often runs in families. Students with dyslexia benefit greatly from an intense intervention with systematic, explicit instruction in phonics and with education therapy that targets specific dyslexic symptoms.

Dyscalculia-  Is a language-based learning disorder that affects one's mathematical abilities. A person with dyscalculia is likely to have trouble counting, calculating, working with math symbols and function, memorizing number facts, telling time on an analog clock, understanding abstract concepts like place value and more.

Like dyslexia, dyscalculia is not uncommon but very few schools are aware of this disorder. At Tutor Time, our math instruction  employs the CRA math model. It starts by using hands-on and tangible materials, then moves on to representational (drawings and visual models) and finishes with the abstract (numbers and equations).

Dysgraphia-Is a language-based learning disorder that affects one's ability to produce writing, hand write legibly, type accurately, and spell correctly. It also affects skills related to the written word, including vocabulary and grammar. As a result, a person with dysgraphia may have trouble communicating their thoughts on paper.

Dysgraphia is not an indicator of intelligence it is caused by trouble with fine motor skills. Students with Dysgraphia benefit from assistive technology and proper accommodations and educational therapy to target the specific symptoms, which Tutor Time make available to students when needed.

Dyspraxia- Is a disorder that affects one's fine and/or gross motor coordination that my also affect speech. Dyspraxia may also affect one's reading, writing, coordination, balance and self-care. A person with dyspraxia may find it challenging to plan the sequence of actions to carry out a task.

Dyspraxia can change over time but people that do not get the proper intervention can experience life long challenges in areas of education as well as job performance. At Tutor Time we provide students with a diagnoses as well as symptoms of dyspraxia strategies to support their learning as well as therapies, interventions and accommodations.

Executive Function- Involves not having the mental skills needed to manage life. These include but are not limited to: planning, organizing, setting goals, prioritizing, tracking progress, following directions, initiating and completing tasks and staying focus and detailed oriented. Executive function isn't a learning disorder out right , but it is associated with other learning disorders like dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia.

At Tutor Time we help students overcome executive functioning issues by implementing routines, use of planners and weekly calendars to keep track of school functions, and homework assignments.

ADHD-Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a more common neurological disorder that challenges one's ability to stay focus, keep still, and manage emotions and impulses. ADHD can also impact a person's executive functioning skills. This disorder  has the highest diagnoses of kids in schools today.

Tutor Time Academy learning center was created to accommodate students with this disorder. We provide a multisensory approach to helping students with this diagnoses and symptoms. We provide short breaks, games, fidget toys, bouncy seats and brain breaks to help students with this disorder reach their academic goals.

Auditory Processing Disorder- APD is related to numerous challenges a person may have in understanding speech. It is not caused or related to hearing loss and is not an indicator of intellectual ability. This is a disorder of how the brain interprets sounds. Speech may be loud and clear enough for others to hear, but people with APD may struggle to distinguish between subtle differences in how words are pronounced, remembering what has just been said, and hearing well in noisy environments.

At Tutor Time we understand that students with this disorder can come across as not listening, may reply "uhh" or "what did you say", a lot of the time. We help students with this disorder by training our teachers and staff to break down instructions in chucks, have students repeat what was said back to them, and have teachers and educational coaches wear noise amplifier headsets in the classroom.
